BY Tim Roten dated April 19th 2009

Deal Fellow Christian,

The following sermon comes from the heart of a pastor, but even more from the heart of a father.  I have a strong desire to see our children grow in the Lord.  It takes all of us working together to bend our children’s hearts toward God.  It is my prayer that we can work together as a church to “Train up a child in the way he should go” so that “when he is old he will not depart from it”.

The last part of the sermon, which deals with smoking, comes from the heart of a boy who lost his grandpa way too soon in life to the effects of smoking.  It comes from a heart that still longs for the relationship that he had with his grandpa and a desire that no child have to go through losing a father, mother, grandpa or grandma to cigarettes and smoking.  It also comes from the voices of the children that I serve.  Although afraid to say anything to the person about their smoking, they share with me the fears that smoking will one day take their loved one away from them.

I hope that this message will inspire myself as well as others to step up and be an example for our children.  To step up to the tasks and struggles that lie ahead of us and be the women and men of integrity that the Bible calls us to be.  There is nothing we can’t accomplish in Christ if we work together as a “family” to raise our children.  It is up to us to nurture and care for these little ones, after all, they are the King’s kids!
